FS2 Loves Reading - a world of stories to explore...

Here we have some of our favourite FS2 stores and poems, shared by Mrs ball and Mrs Walker-Baxter a few years ago.  They both tell a wonderful story and it would be a shame not to keep them available here to share with you too.

EYFS Curriculum

Intent

To deliver the content of the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework, giving children a secure foundation and enabling our children to 'Dare to Dream Big'.

Early childhood is the foundation on which children build the rest of their lives. In the Early Years Foundation Stage at Broom Valley Community School we greatly value the important role that the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) plays in laying secure foundations for future learning and development, however we also believe early childhood is valid in itself, as part of life. It is important to view the EYFS as preparation for life and not simply preparation for the next stage of education.

During the Early Years Foundation Stage “Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential. Children develop quickly in the early years and a child’s experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is important in its own right. Good parenting and high-quality early learning together provide the foundation children will all need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.”

“Statutory Framework for Early Years Foundation Stage”

Department for Education, 2021

Implementation

At BVCS, learning takes place through a balance of child-initiated play and adult led learning, including:

  • The direct teaching of reading, writing and math's everyday
  • Daily opportunities for children to practise and consolidate their previous knowledge and transfer knowledge into Long Term Memory

In the Early Years Foundation Stage at Broom Valley Community School we deliver a curriculum based on the framework for the Revised Statutory Early Years Foundation Stage 2021. This describes the seven areas of learning and development which must be implemented through planned purposeful play.

The Prime Areas of Learning and Development

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language

The Specific Areas of Learning and Development

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Impact

Through our curriculum and teaching, we hope that our pupil’s will become:

  • Unique individuals who form positive relationships with adults and peers
  • Independent, curious learners who explore and ask meaningful questions
  • Confident learners who are ready for the next stage in their learning journey.

Foundation 2 Curriculum

Welcome to F2's Class Page...
Our F2 team are very excited for the year ahead. Your teachers are Miss Jackson (F2 Elm) and Mrs Saddique, Mrs Lynch (F2 Beech), supported by Miss Kitchen and Mrs Oram who work across both classes. We have an amazing team here in F2 who are here to support you every step of the way.

Autumn 1 - What makes me, me?
We are excited to welcome you all to Broom Valley Community School. We hope you have had a lovely summer holiday and are eager to start your school journey with us.  Our main priority for children, as they start school, is to ensure they feel safe and confident to explore their new environment. Children will be supported in developing new relationships with their peers and staff.

This half term, children will start their phonics learning following the Read, Write, Inc. scheme and will be focusing on learning about what similarities and differences they have. Children will explore different ways of making marks and develop the skills needed to create a self-portrait. We will then host our first parent workshop to showcase new knowledge.

Autumn 2 - Traditional tales
Following a great start to the year, F2 are excited to be back. We have a busy half term ahead with preparation for the Nativity soon to start and many festivals and celebrations to learn about. Our priority this half term is getting writing. Now children have had a strong start with phonics, we will begin to apply that new knowledge to writing, specifically letter formation and segmenting and blending. Our wider curriculum focus is design and technology, with each child creating their own bookmark to sell at our Winter wonderland Christmas Market.
Children's learning will focus around traditional tales, learning about the idea of 'once up on a time', mythical creatures and imaginary lands. This leads nicely into our Christmas pantomime of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Spring 1 - How big is our world?
After a well-deserved break, F2 are ready for the next step in their learning journey. We have an exciting start to the new year, with a visit from the Wonderdome, where children will be taken on a virtual adventure into space, learning all about the planets and how astronauts travel.  This will be the start of our wider curriculum learning, all about where we live. Children will get chance to share their knowledge of our world, learn about Rotherham and surrounding areas, as well as develop map reading skills to go on an adventure around school. Children will think about the different ways we can travel and be encouraged to share their own experiences. Children will continue on their phonics scheme, with many beginning to bring home learning sheets home to support their early reading.

Spring 2 - How does your garden grow?
Can you believe we are half way through the year? Children have already learnt so much, but there's no stopping for us! This half term, children will be learning all about the natural world around us. We will be planting a range of seeds and investigating what is needed for them to grow. We will also have some very exciting visitors coming to help us learn about animal life cycles. Children will now be well underway in their reading and writing journey, with many children beginning to bring phonics reading books home with them. Please make sure you are reading with your child every day to support the hard work they are doing at school. Phonics books need to be returned daily in their book bag.
