Physical Education

At Broom Valley, we aim to inspire children’s enjoyment of physical activity and develop their understanding of how to lead healthy, active lives. Through our PE curriculum, children build physical confidence and competence, while developing a positive attitude towards sport and exercise.

We support pupils in acquiring and applying a range of physical skills, enabling them to participate successfully in a variety of sports and activities. Children learn the importance of teamwork, resilience, and fair play, and are encouraged to challenge themselves both individually and as part of a group.

Curriculum
Our curriculum promotes a strong culture of competition, where children demonstrate enthusiasm and excitement in competitive environments. Participation in events such as the Thursday Night Fixtures with Live and Learn has fostered a sense of achievement and created a growing thirst for success in sport across Key Stage 2, with notable success in sports such as basketball, netball, tag rugby, and cricket. This is further reflected in our pupils’ wider achievements, where they have proudly represented Rotherham in basketball at the South Yorkshire finals and achieved further success in cricket by representing South Yorkshire at the Yorkshire finals.

Children with SEND
We are committed to ensuring that all pupils have access to high-quality sporting opportunities. Our children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are actively encouraged and supported to participate in a range of inclusive sporting events, including regular involvement in Panathlon competitions throughout the year. These events provide meaningful opportunities for all pupils to experience success, develop confidence, and engage in competitive sport in a supportive environment.

Leadership
Leadership is also a key element of our PE provision. Year 5 sports leaders play an active role in supporting the development of younger pupils by leading and assisting with activities in Key Stage 1. This not only helps to build confidence, responsibility, and communication skills in our leaders, but also inspires and supports younger children in developing their own enjoyment and skills in physical activity.

External opportunites
We also strive to extend opportunities beyond the school setting by building links with local sports teams, including cricket and rugby clubs. This allows children to continue their sporting journey outside of school and supports the development of lifelong participation in physical activity.

Through PE, children develop an understanding of how physical activity contributes to both their physical and mental wellbeing. We aim to nurture reflective learners who can evaluate their own performance, set goals, and strive for continual personal improvement.
