Welcome to F1 Acorns

Starting F1 is an exciting milestone in a child’s life. Our F1 provides fantastic opportunities to learn through play and experience moments that will spark your child’s imagination and inspire them on their lifelong learning journey.

Nursery admissions

We offer nursery places for 3 year old children in our Foundation 1 Acorns class. All children are entitled to 15 hours of free early education, the school term after their 3rd birthday. Currently, the following sessions are available:

Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 11:30am
Monday to Friday, 12:15pm – 3:15pm

Induction process

Children will join nursery on a flexible basis until the teacher/parent/carer feels that they are settled. It is important that these arrangements remain flexible to cater for the individual needs of the children, building up to a full session.

Children attend nursery for 1 hour on their first day. The length of your child’s next session, will be dependent upon how your child has settled, during their first 1-hour session.

The EYFS Curriculum

Whilst in nursery the children will work within the Foundations Stage and follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. It is underpinned by four key themes and principles. These are:

A Unique Child
Every child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.
Positive Relationships
Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships.
Enabling Environments
Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and carers.
Learning and Development
Children develop and learn in different ways. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early year’s provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities.

Areas of Learning

Within the Foundations Stage curriculum there are seven areas of learning and three key characteristics of effective learning.

The Three Characteristics of Effective Learning

Playing and exploring

The curriculum is planned in a very practical way and based around topics that are of interest, relevant and meaningful to the children. Directed activities take place in the classroom and outside in a secure learning area. Children can also initiate their own learning by selecting activities and their resources.

Indoor - Outdoor - Free flow!

Our new, amazing outdoor area is available to children on a free-flow basis. This means they can fully immerse themselves in all the fun activities we have outside, including a large sunken sandpit, mud kitchen and climbing wall. There is also a covered stage area for budding thespians!

Every child is unique and is able to thrive with the teaching and care of our early years’ experts. Children learn in a range of settings: whole class sessions; teacher led small group sessions and independent child led activities. At the end of the Nursery year, a careful programme of transition helps children to move smoothly into our F2 Reception class. Miss Jackson (Nursery Teacher)

We love stories

Here at Broom Valley Community School we hold a love of reading in high esteem. Children are encouraged and supported to experience all the joys a book can bring. We have an exciting ‘jungle themed’ reading area, full of comfy cushions for children to relax on whilst they are looking at stories. We also have our own nursery virtual library, so children can share the stories they enjoy in the classroom with their families at home.

Key Worker

At the start of the year your child will be assigned a key person. This will be the class teacher or one of the Learning Support Assistants that work in the nursery. Their role is to help ensure that your child’ provision meets his/her individual needs. They help each child become familiar with the setting, routines and also build relationships between home and school.
